Summary: | This paper discusses the design and analysis of a proposed 15MW magnetically geared propulsion motor or Pseudo Direct-Drive (PDD®) for a naval application. The drive-train comprises two motors mounted in tandem to produce 15MW total power at less than lOOrpm. The PDD® offers a number of advantages over its counterparts for this application: very high torque density, high efficiency, significantly reduced cooling requirements, high power factor (>0.9), low cogging torque and very low transmission of torsional vibrations to the shaft.
