Summary: | The Legislative Council (LegCo) elections held in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People's Republic of China (PRC) on 10 Sept 2000 were marked by a decline in the performance of the Democratic Party (DP) & the ability of the pro-Beijing Democratic Alliance for Betterment of Hong Kong (DAB) to mobilize public support despite a scandal involving its former vice chairman, Gary Cheng Kainam. While the DP suffered from a decline of 172,212 votes compared with its gain of votes in the 1998 Legislative Council's direct elections, the DAB gained 18,290 votes compared with the result of direct elections in 1998 (Apple Daily, 12 Sept 2000). This article analyzes the results of the 2000 LegCo elections, focusing on the DP & the DAB because they are the two largest political parties in the HKSAR. It will also examine the choices of voters in the 2000 LegCo's direct elections. 10 Tables, 6 References. Adapted from the source document. |
