Summary: | Relations between the US & Canada have generally run smoothly in the past. This article identifies the structural & situational factors that define the relationship. Power asymmetry & Canada's dependence on the US, the combined sociopolitical differences between the countries, plus formal & informal bilateral institutions are three of the most important structural factors that concern the Canadians. On the other hand, the relationship can be described as egalitarian & interdependent, as the two countries have much in common, both being liberal democracies. The article describes the roots of the relationship & the effects of the above factors. Finally, details that support a pessimistic view of future relations are given. 50 References. R. Larsen |
