Description
Summary:This study was carried out to discover whether an alternative growing from officinal and spice plants on grassland sites in the north eastern part of Germany is possible. To find suitable species, special botanical studies of large grassland areas were made and analysed. Furthermore, parcel experiments with different species as well as field experiments in farms were made. First of all, the common market species Petasites hybridus L., Valeriana officinalis L., Plantago lanceolata L. and Carum carvi L. are preferred, especially for lowland grassland sites with influence of groundwater. They are meant to reach a high yield level after ploughing of grassland. Moreover those species have quite good quality parameters. Sandy soils as well as organic stoneless ones offer suitable conditions concerning cleaning and working of the root mass. During the time of harvesting, increasing groundwater levels in wintertime have to be considered.
