SHRIMP U - Pb depositional age for the lower Hardey Formation: evidence for diachronous deposition of the lower Fortescue Group in the southern Pilbara region, Western Australia
A SHRIMP zircon U - Pb age is reported for the Hardey Formation, lower Fortescue Group in the southern Pilbara region of Western Australia. Zircons extracted from an accretionary lapilli-bearing siltstone of the Hardey Formation give a 207 Pb/ 206 Pb age of 2750 ± 5 Ma (n = 36), which is regarded as...

Summary: | A SHRIMP zircon U - Pb age is reported for the Hardey Formation, lower Fortescue Group in the southern Pilbara region of Western Australia. Zircons extracted from an accretionary lapilli-bearing siltstone of the Hardey Formation give a
207
Pb/
206
Pb age of 2750 ± 5 Ma (n = 36), which is regarded as an age of felsic volcanism contemporaneous with deposition of the Hardey Formation. Published zircon ages, primarily on felsic intrusives within the Hardey Formation in the northern Pilbara are statistically significantly different, and older than the age of ca 2750 Ma presented here, suggesting that a diachronous surface existed across the Pilbara Craton during deposition of the Hardey Formation. |
