Summary: | The problems faced by women in state inpatient psychiatric facilities became real to me when I conducted a detailed review of inpatient records in one institution as part of a 1980 evaluation study of patient careers. Because of our small sample, it was not possible to document statistically differences between men and women in terms of admission and discharge criteria or treatment differences. However, based on my impressions, I found striking differences. I will present these differences as hypotheses, with the hope that in the future they may be tested with a thorough review. My conclusions concern what might be thought of as acute cases -- "model clients" with only one or two inpatient episodes, hospitalized for less than 90 days.
