Summary: | The desire to generalize current knowledge of the phased structure of human psychological development into a unified sequence that covers various stages of the developmental process as well as its mechanisms will continue to occupy psychologists until they construct this synthetic depiction. Such a universal schema could play a role in developmental psychology similar to that of the evolutionary tree in biology or the periodic table in chemistry-the role of pointing up the gaps in our knowledge. If a general picture of development is constructed, psychologists and educational theorists would be able to see the blanks or gaps, in the cultural and educational spaces that they construct in order to support optimal ways of facilitating human development at different ages (from the standpoint of particular cultural values). |
