Description
Summary:We present the results of the development and comprehensive characterization of fully densified Er3+:MgO and Nd3+:MgO transparent ceramics fabricated from specially formulated nanopowders. Also presented are the spectroscopic characterization results (absorption, fluorescence and emission lifetimes) of Er3+ and Nd3+ dopant ions in MgO in the temperature range 10 to 300 K. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported successful demonstration of bulk MgO host material doped with rare earth (RE) ions. Spectroscopic results are indicative of a single-site RE ion incorporation with a nearly perfect single crystalline environment within the MgO ceramic grains. The results are presented with major emphasis on potential laser application and the outlook for substantially improved laser power scaling at room temperature based on the unique thermal properties of the host material.
