Summary: | We have demonstrated the applicability of personal glucose meters for regularly monitoring the bacteriological quality of potable water. The detection principle is based on the preferred consumption of glucose by E.coli, which is measured using a personal glucose meter. The drop in glucose concentrations over time was correlated to the concentration of E.coli. We could accurately detect higher levels of contamination (~2x108 CFU) within 1 hr and extremely low levels of contamination (~2 CFU) within a maximum of 8 hr. The method presented is simple, inexpensive, easy to use and has the potential to be developed into a comprehensive test kit, which can provide both qualitative and quantitative results. |
