Description
Summary:The results presented summarize the current state for the problems concerning the earth and the planets on a global scale, the regional induction studies, laboratory model experiments and laboratory measurements of electrical conductivity of rocks. For regional studies both geomagnetic deep-sounding and magnetotelluric projects are considered. The connection between electrical conductivity profiles and temperature distributions within the interiors of the earth and the moon is discussed, and an attempt is made to classify the results of regional induction studies according to tectonic and geological settings. The profiles obtained in the recent investigations of the lunar interior suggest that the conductivity increases from one millionth S/m near the lunar surface to one thousandth S/m at a depth of 500 km, with corresponding temperatures increasing over the range from 0 to 1200 C. Particular attention is given to the lateral variations of conductivity in the crust and mantle. The major new trends in electrical conductivity studies are analyzed.
