Summary: | The starting point for crystal growth techniques is determined by the properties expected of the material to be produced. Growth in space is characterized by the near-absence of gravity, which also means the nearabsence of convection and introduces the possibility of zone melting of all substances. The selection of growth techniques involves heating methods as well as materials. The latter include technically and economically important crystals like silicon, and model substances like InSb for basic studies of crystal growth. Close cooperation between the fluid mechanics and crystal growth disciplines is necessary for future success in this field. |
