Summary: | If the Italian immigrant experience has a presence in anthologies of multicultural American literature, it is usually through a short story by John Fante. He published fully half of his lifetime production of short stories before 1940, in national magazines such as American Mercury, Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s Bazaar, and Scribner’s. He had also published two novels and Dago Red, a collection of his stories, which was described in a review in the Nation as “plotless sketches of the type written by William Saroyan.”
