Description
Summary:The essay analyzes the historical context of Il Fiore della granadiglia (Bologna, 1609), a collection of poems and discourses on the passion flower. The booklet - one of the sources for Giovan Battista Marino's Adonis ( 1623) - initiated the 17th-century fortune of the passion flower literary theme. Between 1608 and 1609 the plant was presented to Pope Paul V, and soon after the Jesuits started promoting an European-scale publishing campaign that transformed the flower into a religious and political symbol for the Society of Jesus.
