Description
Summary:The paper focuses on two archaic laws from Eleutherna (Crete): one concerns a prohibition of drinking to intoxication, the other mentions one or more citharists and an apamia, this last being a portion of land cultivated by apamiotai, a category of rural serfs. It is suggested that both laws regulate aspects of meetings which may be related to the important institution of the common messes, whose supply and organization involves both city and countryside.
