Summary:This paper deals with the presence, criticism and resemantization of the Crocean category of 'distinction' in Antonio Gramsci's Prison Notebooks. In particular, the paper proposes a diachronic analysis of the various occurrences of that category, in the light of which three different phases in the Gramscian use of it are established: a mainly negative one, corresponding to the writings of the early Notebooks (1-4), in which the Crocean meaning of the category is refused in favour of a dialectic conception of the base/superstructure relation; an intermediate one, corresponding to the writings of the Notebooks 6, 7, 8, in which the speculative use of the category is distinguished from its methodological meaning; and a constructive one, corresponding to the writings of the Notebooks 9, 10, 11, 13, in which the category is recovered in the framework of the philosophy of praxis. The toretical premises of such a revival are the notions of 'translatability', 'determined market' and 'hegemony'.
