Description
Summary:Sediment cores from Lake Gårdsjön, Bohuslän province, SW Sweden, were used to study the course of the acidification of the lake. The Holocene pH history of the lake water was reconstructed by diatom analysis. The pH of the lake decreased from 7 to 6 during the course of about 12 500 yr due to natural causes, but during the past few decades the pH rapidly decreased to 4.5. The significance of vegetational changes and acid precipitation with regard to the recent acidification is discussed.
