Summary: | In the first part of this paper the main trends of medicine in Japan during the past four centuries, i.e., the shift from religious, speculative notions of therapy to secular medicine, are studied. A movement of philological criticism stimulated an empirical orientation contributing to the development of a new medical system which was a combination of old oriental patterns and European elements. The rise of the German medical school system as the official model of Japanese medicine is also discussed. In the second part Mori Ogai's school and university years are examined in order to gain insights into the background of Japan's new orientation towards higher education. When Ogai went to Germany his self-understanding as a Japanese conflicted with Western views of his native country. His reactions to and resolutions of these conflicts, particularly in the realm of medicine, are also discussed here. |
