Summary:The paper consists of a floristic and estructural description of a forest stand of Nothofagus dombeyi ("coihue") in the Lago Gutiérrez area in the southern andean region of Argentina. Five strata are recognized: two tree layers, a tall shrub-small tree stratum, a small shrub stratum and a herbaceous one. Plant species per strata are listed with its importance values. Trees more than 10 cm dbh, were studied by quarter point technique; saplings, seedlings, shrubs and herbs were recorded in frequency and density quadrats. A diametric classes pyramid of N. dombeyi is made to analyze the population structure of the dominant tree, and an attempt is made to explain the dynamical aspects of this population, the abiotic factors (light intensity, summer drought, aridization of climate) that affect it and the role of the species in the forests where it occurs.
