Description
Summary:Jacques Handschin (1886-1955) was professor for organ in St. Petersburg until 1920 when he left Russia as a consequence of the revolution. His subsequent work as a musicologist in Basel led to his book on the elements of music, Der Toncharakter (1948). In 2011 two contributions to Handschin’s work appeared, the first of which is devoted to Handschin’s Russian years, while the second examines the aspect of ambiguity in his concept of Toncharakter-criticized for its inconsistency by Cahl Dahlhaus- and reinterprets this ambiguity in terms of mathematical combinatorics. The present article seeks to explain the mathematical argument in simple language and to use it to interpret Handschin’s philosophy of music.
