Summary: | Investigations were carried out to develop methods to identify cvs (cultivars) of barley at the seedling stage. Seeds of 24 cvs were grown in media treated and untreated with GA3 (gibberellic acid) in controlled environmental conditions. The diagnostic characteristics studied were the length of the ctile (coleoptile), first leaf and first internode. The cvs differed in the length of these structures when grown in the untreated media. Further differences between cvs were shown in the elongation of these structures in response to GA3. On the basis of these findings it was possible to construct a key to identify 11 of the 24 cvs in these studies. |
