The Middle Minoan III period at Galatas: pottery and historical implications

The present paper discusses MM III pottery from Galatas. The clear stratigraphical sequence of the site combined with its systematic and documented investigation provide valuable information on the determination of chronological differentiation and contribute significantly to the understanding of ceramic production in the area of north-central Crete. Discussion shows that MM III was a period of unprecedented prosperity for Galatas, as comes out by the establishment of the palace, the seat of the political group, which controlled affairs in the Pediada, and the expansion and flourishing of the settlement. Το παρόν άθρο πραγματεύεται τη MM III κεραμική από τον Γαλατά. Η καθαρή στρωματογραφική ακολουθία του χώρου, σε συνδυασμό με τη συστηματική και τεκμηριωμένη έρευνά του, μας παρέχουν πολύτιμες πληροφορίες για τον καθορισμό της χρονολογικής διαφοροποίησης και συνεισφέρουν σημαντικά στην κατανόηση της κεραμικής παραγωγής. Η συζήτηση δείχνει ότι η MM III ήταν μια περίοδος πρωτοφανούς ευημερίας για τον Γαλατά, όπως καταφαίνεται από την ίδρυση του ανακτόρου, έδρα της πολιτικής ομάδας η οποία ήλεγχε τα πράγματα στην Πεδιάδα, καθώς και από την επέκταση και την άνθιση του οικισμού.
