Description
Summary:Jewish society did not exist in isolation during the Talmudic period. Hellenism penetrated all strata and influenced all aspects of Jewish society during this period. This influence increased through the Talmudic period and peaked during the 5th and 6th centuries. Jewish cemeteries are one of the areas in which the extent and depth of Hellenistic influence on Jewish society can be observed. The influence of Hellenistic burial customs on Jewish burial in the Galilee is evident from the study of archaeological remains. The plan of the tombs as well as the use of sarcophagi, lead and clay coffins and the abundance of Greek inscriptions, demonstrate the extent of Hellenistic influence on Jewish society. Jewish burial laws also reflect this influence — some of the laws suggest the acceptance of certain Hellenistic customs, while others prohibit pagan customs which the rabbis deemed contrary to Jewish law and belief.
