Summary: | Physiologist and philosopher Hermann Lotze (1817-1881) was one of the initiators of the school of thought that investigated musical elements through the avenues of both acoustics and musicology. He envisioned the union of science and the humanities, and only his premature death prevented him from seeing the project established within Berlin’s department of psychology in 1894. In his review of Hanslick’s book Vom Musikalisch-Schönen, he supported Hanslick’s distinction between the cognizance of compositional particularities and the elemental powers of sound. For Lotze, aesthetic appreciation implied experiencing music in the context of philosophical and cultural values, as opposed to Robert Zimmermann, who, in his review of Hanslick’s text, defined music as a set of formal relationships dedicated to the sense of hearing, devoid of any further consequence or meaning. |
