LE PRIVILÈGE D'URBAIN II POUR SAINT-GÉRAUD D'AURILLAC (19 AVRIL 1096, JL 5563) : UN ACTE FALSIFIÉ AU XIIIeSIÈCLE

Un privilège d'Urbain II pour Saint-Géraud d'Aurillac censément daté du 19 avril 1096 prétend soumettre l'ensemble de la ville à l'autorité spirituelle de l'abbé et du pape. Connu par la copie (XVIIIe siècle) d'un vidimus de 1349, utilisé par les historiens français à diverses reprises comme authentique, cet acte a été indiqué comme interpolé par Pflugk-Harttung dès 1880 et encore en 1988 par Alfons Becker. Les données chronologiques sont en effet contradictoires et permettent de conclure à la falsification. Au terme d'une étude de la tradition du texte, des autres bulles pontificales destinées à Saint-Géraud et de l'évolution des relations entre la commune et l'abbaye, il est possible de conclure que la falsification a eu lieu peu avant 1291, sur la base d'un privilège authentique effectivement délivré par Urbain II le 19 avril 1095 et mentionné dans des actes du XIIe siècle. Le texte fait l'objet en annexe d'une nouvelle édition critique, visant à distinguer le texte originel et la partie interpolée. A privilege in the name of Urban II for Saint-Géraud of Aurillac, purportedly dated 19 April 1096, subjected the whole town to the spiritual authority of both the pope and the abbot. Known through an eighteenth-century copy of a vidimus dated 1349, it has been treated until recently as authentic by several French historians, although in 1880 Julius Pflug-Harttung declared its contents interpolated, a judgement repeated in 1988 by Alfons Becker. The chronological data, which are in fact contradictory, prove that the act is not genuine. Examination of its textual transmission and consideration of other papal bulls for Saint-Géraud and of the history of relations between the commune and the abbey reveal that an original privilege issued by Urban II on 19 April 1095, mentioned in other acts in the twelfth century, was falsified not long before 1291. A new critical edition of the privilege distinguishes the original text from the interpolation. Ein Privileg Urbans II. für Saint-Géraud in Aurillac, angeblich am 19.
