Summary:The most recent studies in cognitive linguistics allow us to interpret the differences between Iliad and Odyssey – specifically concerning the representation of the hero's thoughts – with a close look at the context and the language of performance. This paper's aim, having its start from Joseph Russo's studies, is to examine the changes between the two poems in the language and conceptualization of doubt conveyed by the verb μερμηρίζω, in an ongoing dialectic between concreteness and abstraction, tradition and renewal.
