Summary: | Geographic Information Systems (GIS) greatly facilitate the recording, analysis, and display of data from archaeological survey. This paper discusses some of the issues surrounding the use of GIS, arguing that neither expensive equipment nor vast technical expertise are needed to incorporate its use into a survey. The database for finds from a survey around Alezio (reported elsewhere in this volume) is presented. In a step-by-step fashion, the importing of maps and aerial photographs into the GIS is described, along with instructions on how to link the database of finds to this information. Finally, methods of interrogating these data and of displaying the results in 'Thematic Maps' are explained. |
