Description
Summary:This article is an attempt to reconstruct J.S. Mill’s and A. de Tocqueville’s attitudes towards the social status of women, especially the reasons, basis and the sense of their dependence. That problem is shown in connection with the idea of democracy expressed by both philosophers. It examines the differences in their opinions about the tendency and shape of social life. Moreover, this article shows, using the example of women’s rights in Europe and America, dissimilarities in understanding of freedom and equality as well as the relationship between them. The author tries to answer the question about the quintessence of liberalism and circumstances which enable defining Mill and Tocqueville as philosophers of liberalism. The article also discusses the legal status of women in the ninetieth century, both in their private and public and particularly in election rights.
