Summary: | With the advent of a booming tourist trade on the island of St. Croix, the demand for freshwater increased dramatically. Historically, freshwater was supplied by wells and cisterns, but as the island's population grew, demand far exceeded supply. A seawater desalinization plant was constructed to deal with the problem, but rising petroleum costs have escalated production costs, making potable water an expensive commodity. In response to the problem, plans were drawn up to recharge the island's groundwater with treated wastewater. |
