Description
Summary:Changes in water column concentration of particulate sludge material, dissolved oxygen, orthophosphorus, and nitrogen in ammonium, urea, nitrate, and nitrite forms were measured at fixed positions following wastewater sludge dumpings in New York Bight. The measurements were made in October, April, and August and lasted 13, 3.5, and 6.5 hours respectively. Most particulate carbon settled to the bottom within an hour, while soluble nutrients remained in the upper seven metres of the column for at least 6.5 hours. The particulate organic bottom material seems to be degraded -consuming oxygen and releasing nutrients.
