Description
Summary:Rising fuel prices and possible curtailment of fuel supplies have prompted the Metropolitan Waste Control Commission (MWCC) of the Minneapolis/St. Paul area to examine the use of coal and other solid combustibles as supplemental heat sources for multiple-hearth sludge incineration. With a constant feed rate. low-sulfur lump coal was added to dewatered sludge being fed to the furnace, reducing incinerator oil requirements by about 70%. With full-scale retrofit of the $7.57\times 10^{4}\text{-}{\rm m}^{3}/{\rm d}$ treatment plant, total annual costs for coal supplemental feeding would be $161 000, but oil savings $240 000.
