description | Scanning and transmission electron microscopy were used to study the olfactory sensilla of the basal flagellar subsegment, or funiculus, of the antennae of the horn fly, Haematobia irritans irritans (L.). Surface olfactory sensilla consist of thick-walled and 3 morphological types of thin-walled multiporous sensilla; all have typical pore-tubule systems. In addition, surface grooved sensilla are present. Shallow depressions on the proximal ventral surface are populated exclusively with thin-walled multiporous clavate sensilla. Two to 3 olfactory pits on the dorsomedial surface as well as a single pit on the ventral surface also contain numerous thin-walled and grooved sensilla morphologically similar to their surface counterparts. |
