Summary: | The Amahami Site (32ME8), portions of which were salvaged in 1,971-1972, is the only site at which major excavations of materials from a documented pre-1837 smallpox epidemic Hidatsa occupation have been carried out. Donald J. Lehmer's instrumental assistance in the project and definitions of the Heart River and Knife River Phases are reviewed. Architectural remains exposed at Amahami suggest that Hidatsa structures may not always fit the "expected" architectural format implied in G. L. Wilson's descriptions of such structures. |
