Summary: | The sedimentary infilling in the mouth of the estuary of Guernica caused by recession of the barrier over almost the last 60 years has been studied. A large volume of sand including a dune field was reworked, generating a broad flat upper barrier flooded during spring tides and in the inner side a wide washover fan which extended into the sandy bay modifying the channels and shoals. Dredging of the main channel was proposed as a management response which would recycle the sands by dumping them on the shallow offshore exposed beach, but the authorities preferred direct rebuilding of the upper barrier. |
