LE COMPLEXE DE PROMÉTHÉE OU SOUS LE SIGNE DU FEU: Tyrannie et volonté de savoir chez Beckett

Le présent essai explore le complexe de Prométhée en faisant croiser les conceptions qui allient le feu à l'intelligence, au pouvoir, et au divin dans les vieilles religions, dans la mythologie, et chez Héraclite avec la pensée moderne de Bachelard, de Bion, et de Foucault associant sexualité, volonté de savoir, et pouvoir. Beckett, par contre, succédant aux gnostiques, réduit cette "idolâtrie du feu" en cendres. Dans Watt, Eleutheria, Molloy, Godot, La dernière bande, et Catastrophe (pour ne citer qu'eux), des agents tyranniques cherchant à imposer leurs 'lumières' sont déjoués par le feu éteint qui sape leur 'dictature.' In this essay I explore the Prometheus complex by crisscrossing from the notions derived from religion, mythology, and Heraclitus that connect fire with intelligence, power, and the divine to the modern thought of Bachelard, Bion, and Foucault that links sexuality and power with the will to knowledge. Beckett, on the contrary, taking his cue from the gnostics, reduces such fire idolatry to ashes. In Watt, Eleutheria, Molloy, Godot, Krapp's Last Tape, and Catastrophe (to cite only these), tyrannical agents are mocked as their fire is extinguished, their thunder stolen or stilled, sapping their 'directorial' powers.
