Description
Summary:This paper is a preliminary report of the excavations in the Iron Age cemeteries of the Latin city Crustumerium (Rome, Italy). The excavations were carried out by the University of Leipzig, Chair of Prehistory, in October 2001. A grave robbery which destroyed two loculus graves (tombs 102 and 103) was documented in the cemetery Monte Del Bufalo. Investigations were conducted for the first time at the cemetery Cisterna Grande where two burial chambers (tombs 1 and 2) with a long dromos were located. Tomb 1 was excavated and yielded two burials of adult individuals. The only grave goods found were small iron nails while other dating finds are lacking. The burial dates probably around 500 BC (Archaic period) according to the grave structure and the absence of finds.
