Description
Summary:The article aims at defining and characterizing the multi-faceted phenomenon of militias by pointing to the aspect of "status quo-oriented violence" (in distinction to "revolutionary violence") and by providing a distinction of three militia profiles: (a) counter-insurgency, (b) counter-rival and (c) counter-crime. These fields are linked to various "stakeholders" who instigate and make use of militia violence for securing and protecting their political as well as economic interests. The article concludes with some reflections on militia violence and the loss of control, and how these developments relate to public security.
