Summary: | This paper is dedicated to the Latin alphabetical version of Dioscorides’ De materia medica, a treatise which is transmitted in manuscripts from the end of the 11th century onward, often under the title Liber Dyascoridis. After a general presentation, it offers a list of the manuscript witnesses (20) and of the printed editions. It analyzes the value of the printed editions and proposes a first attempt to classify the manuscripts. Then, it presents the writing method and the sources: one main source (a Latin translation of De materia medica) and numerous secondary sources, many of which have not yet been identified. Almost all of them are treatises written in Latin, or ancient Latin translations of Greek treatises but, for the first time, the article identifies among the sources some excerpts of an otherwise unknown Latin translation of an Arabic work, the Kitāb al-Ḥāwī fī al-ṭibb by Rāzī. To conclude, the article reconsiders the question of author and date of the Liber Dyascoridis. |
