Summary: | In their transmission over the generations liturgical traditions exhibit not just continuity but also change. Some changes can be attributed to disruptions in the transmission process or misunderstandings; in other cases, the changes are deliberate and are fueled by linguistic, halakhic, or textual considerations.
This paper discusses changes in the text of the post-circumcision blessing in the Ashkenazic tradition and their underlying motivation. Ashkenazic manuscripts and printed circumcision books make it possible to track these alterations; in turn, various halakhic and linguistic sources shed light on the different considerations involved in the process. This study of the development of the liturgy makes it possible to tentatively reconstruct the original text of this blessing. However, beyond the specific case analyzed here, this study illustrates the relationship between liturgical texts, grammar, and halakhah, and also clarifies the mechanisms of change in liturgical traditions. |
