Description
Summary:A series of decorated 'lunense'-marble fragments are exposed On the walls of the Atrium of Santa Maria Antiqua in the Roman Forum, since the beginning of the Twentieth century, but remain strangely unpublished. On the basis of the historical-artistic analysis of the pieces and the review of the available information relating to the finding context, this paper proposes to recognize in these fragments the remains of a frieze of the early Julio-Claudian period, belonging to a public monument that once existed between the North-West slopes of the Palatine and the Roman Forum. In particular, the author proposes the hypothesis of attribute the frieze to the lost ara Numinis Augusti.
