Summary: | This paper analyses migration and development processes in Malula, a residential suburb of the Syrian capital Damascus. It examines the significance of knowledge and power in migration and remigration processes and development initiatives at the local level. On the basis of a household survey and guided biographical interviews, it is possible to show how traditional power constellations were turned upside-down in a village characterised by migration and remigration: By migrating to Damascus and Lebanon members of destitute families with no influence gain knowledge. By subsequently remigrating to the village they gain power, using it for themselves, their families and the village, while the once influential big farming families increasingly lose influence in a more meritocratic society. |
