Summary: | Traditionally the 16th and 17th centuries have been seen as a time of crisis for the aristocracy. Recent research however rejected or modified this approach. Younger scholars prefer to speak of a process of adaptation and of a restructuring of the noble elite. This is not to deny that access to royal or princely power became increasingly important in defining noble Status. This review of recent publications following this approach analyzes the changing structure of noble society during the early modern period. |
