Summary:A specific phenomenon for the functioning of science in socialist society was the institution of qualifiers - a system of people and mechanisms that ensured the selection of "undesired" scientific workers, research trends, etc. The criteria of "undesirability" were set by the ideological postulates and the political practice of the socialist regime. The main purpose of this informal social institution was to strengthen those in power. The present study deals with the origin of this institution, its manifestations and the mechanisms of its functioning.
