Description
Summary:The introductory section of the article presents a sketch of the historical and theoretical context in which Karl Mannheim proposed the notion of a freefloating (or socially unattached) intelligentsia as a competent social subject for realising a synthesis of partial (competing) ideological positions. The article then goes on to deal with the two-fold purpose behind the introduction of this notion to Mannheim's theoretical project of rationalised politics: to ground his project empirically, and to provide it with a more direct practical relevance. The first section describes the problems Mannheim faces when attempting to identify the subject of synthetic knowledge empirically. The second section shows how the first intention is closely connected to Mannheim's (mis-) understanding of the relationship between theoretical activity and practical politics.
