Summary: | This essay analyzes the subject and style of Cln romanzo in uapore, written by Collodi at the beginning of his career in 1856. Cln romanzo in uapore is a bizarre historical-economic-artistic (and something more!) guide to the railway journey from Florence to Uvorno, but also a parody of the nineteenth-century French and Italian novel. Daniela Marchesci stresses Laurence Sterne's great influence and the precocious perfection and coherence of Coilodi's style, brought to a superlative level in his masterpiece Le auuenture di Pinocchio (1883). It is because of the practice of Sterne's literary pattern, rejected by Francesco De Sanctis and consequently by Italian critics, that Collodi (the best Italian "interpreter" of Sterne) and his book Pinnochio have often been misunderstood and neglected not only in the nineteenth century but also in present literary histories. |
