Description
Summary:While European policies were clearly engaged in favor of linguistic diversity, the recognition by France of its regional and minority languages is not yet a reality. This article explains the main lines of European language policies, such as multilingual and intercultural education, advocated by the Council of Europe. It then describes the impact of these policies in France, particularly through the debate on the ratification of the European Charter for Regional or Minority languages, until these languages were recognized by the French Constitution in 2008.
