Description
Summary:This inquiry on the ties connecting the two powerful Jewish Portuguese communities of XVIII century Europe is based on letters to Leghorn registered in the Copiador de Cartas of the Portuguese Jewish Community in Amsterdam. It shows that Amsterdam and Leghorn were helping each other in such matters as rescuing prisoners, sending funds to the Holy Land, defending against accusations of ritual murder and, generally speaking, assuming common tasks on behalf of the Jewish people. In the «Amsterdam-Leghorn connection» Amsterdam was loosing its previous primacy.
