Description
Summary:The present essay discusses the migration and integration of Sephardim from the eastern Sephardi Diaspora into the Portuguese community of early modern Amsterdam, reputed for its wealth and benevolence in a city which acted as a world center of international trade at the time and was famous for its tolerance. Driven by poverty and wars, the Sephardim from the East tried to find their place amid people equally originating from the Spanish and Portuguese Jewish nation, but from a different setting: ex-conversos, who had recently arrived from the Iberian peninsula. The encounter between the two cultures was often painful, due to contrasts in cultural and social-economic background. Many of the eastern Sephardim left the city disillusioned. Those who stayed (and their offspring), however, left an important imprint on Dutch and Jewish society, well into modern times.
