Summary: | First collected in Greece over a century ago on the E Aegean island of Lesvos, Valerianella orientalis was until recently thought of as an exclusively SW Asian species. It has now been found not only in the E Aegean area, but also on the islands of Naxos and Aegina, in Attica and Boeotia, and most recently on the Peloponnisos. While a single find in Spain may correspond to a new introduction, the Greek occurrences are considered to be at least archaeophytic if not truly autochthonous. The relationship and distinctive features of V. orientalis are reviewed and its characteristic fruit morphology and anatomy are illustrated. |
