Summary: | Papua New Guinea is a developing country reasonably well endowed with forest resources, but with an insufficiency of such facilities as schools, health centres, roads and dispersed rural industry. The wise use of its natural resources is part of the national development strategy. As a result of a small domestic market for timber products, a less favourable species composition than its neighbours and a government decision to maintain a hard currency, the policy of encouraging processing for export has been temporarily modified in favour of log exports. The disadvantages and problems of being tied to the markets of one or two major timber importers have long been experienced. The Forestry Development Corporations (F.D.C.'s) represent an attempt to satisfy both the needs of Papua New Guinea and of the foreign companies whose expertise is essential in the creation of a viable timber industry. |
