description The endangered foundations of Nigeria's multiethnic edifice seem to be all too apparent from the ethnic, regional, religious and political turbulence that has assailed the country since the inauguration of the country's fourth democratic republic in May 1999. An attempt is made in this paper to assess the main sources of instability and conflict in Nigeria's post-civil war federal union. In addition, it analyzes the seeming resilience of the Union in the face of deep sectional rifts, the contending perspectives on the pathway to the political reformation or stabilization of the federation, and the outlook and challenges for the continued survival and stability of the Nigerian political entity in the context of the federation's current inclement ethnic conditions.
